Nolan teaches me something everyday. Some days they are sweet and special lessons and other days, the lessons include thoughts like, “wow I had no idea that was so appealing….and dangerous” which leads to a new form of redirection and baby proofing.
We nicknamed our son “Danger” from his time in utero. His behavior in the womb indicated that we had a very feisty and very opinionated child. We knew we would have to be on our toes…and probably running. During our maternity photo shoot for example… Our amazing friends, Abbie and Jason, of Chariot Creative (they help us design and maintain this website), who are super talented in so many ways, graciously decided to take our maternity photos. Abbie has a flair for photography, and by flair I mean she is incredible. And Jason is a pretty awesome photographer’s assistant. We took the photos in a beautiful arboretum. I had pinterest visions..because who doesn’t these days? One of them was me laying down with blocks spelling “NOLAN” on my belly. I lay down, we precariously balance the baby blocks spelling his name on my rather large belly, Abbie takes a step back and baby Nolan kicked the blocks off of my belly just as Abbie took the shot. I don’t even remember how many takes it took. Every time we placed the blocks, he kicked them off…he clearly didn’t think my idea was great. We did finally get ONE shot, but in haste of trying to throw the blocks on and snap the picture right as they rested on my belly, we had left one of the “N”s upside down…It was the only shot we got. And to this day, I look at that gorgeous canvas above his changing table, see that upside-down N and smile. He had spunk and personality from the start.
Today we spent the afternoon with some good friends and at a playground that Zak helped design. Nolan LOVED it. Running, laughing and just enjoying life. I mean, I can’t remember the last time I got that excited about a cow. But it made me think…when was the last time I got that excited about anything? As part of my family’s healthy living changes in diet, moving more, and becoming more mentally balanced…I think I need to add living life to the fullest like my son. I need to find my cow moment each day …ok this made me laugh to type, but seriously. Find a spark each day and just let yourself go a bit. Life is too short. Enjoy yourself. Oh and take a nap 😉 it makes everything better.
