When we were visiting with Bob and Martie (Zak’s parents) last week, I mentioned that Zak and I have been looking for an old steering wheel for Nolan. This search began after he stiff-armed another child off of a steering wheel at the playground because it was “mine” (embarrassing parent moment that involved removing him screaming from the steering wheel and bringing him to the car while trying to explain sharing…didn’t go over well) and we realized that there was always a line to use them.
We have a deck off the back of the house which is the perfect place to mount it. That night, they scoured craigslist and found us a steering wheel from an old boat. They drove an hour to pick it up and then the next day Bob drove 3 hours to come and install of for Nolan! Amazing grandparents or what??
We didn’t have pressure treated lumber scraps, but had some wood left over from our window trim projects. We decided to use that, knowing we are going to extend then deck soon and will make a more permanent home at that time.
Bob getting some “DaneGoodHelp” from Lillie.
Installing the boards with screws into the deck. The board was a bit short, but it worked. As Bob humorously put it,
I don’t understand it, I cut it twice and it was still too short
Finding the perfect spot and installing the hardware to make the wheel spin!
A little decorative white cap, perfect for “beep beeping.” And Nolan LOVED it!!!
